Tar & Chip PAVING
What is this exactly? Tar and chip paving is a surface treatment of liquid asphalt and small 1B stone. First, as with most driveway surfaces, a good base must exist. Hot asphalt emulsion is sprayed over the base. This is followed by a coating of small 1B stone, which is rolled into the liquid asphalt with a rubber tired (pneumatic) roller, to form the finished surface. In most cases 2 layers are applied which provide a good sturdy surface. Although the name "tar & chip" might not be familiar, you almost certainly have seen driveways and roads built this way. Most secondary roads have a tar and chip surface which helps preserve them. Tar and chip can be installed over existing driveway materials, such as stone, asphalt or concrete, provided they are in reasonably good shape. The texture of tar and chip paving makes for better traction when the surface is wet or snow covered.
